Training Teachers to Teach Different Learners and Learning Styles

VARK. If you are thinking that VARK is the sound made by a Czechoslovakian dog, then you were probably half asleep during this particular part of your teacher education. VARK is the mnemonic used for remembering the four different learning styles. The learning styles are, of course, Visual, Audio, Reading and Kinaesthetic. And each learning style needs to be catered to by a good teacher.

Around the world, those who provide teacher education are waking up to the fact that teachers these days have to know how to cater to all the different learning styles. The days when the teacher just stood up the front of the class talking with a piece of chalk (or a whiteboard marker) in his/her hand are over. While this lecture-plus-chalkboard method of teaching was fine for the audio learner and had some effect with the reading learners, the visuals and the kinaesthetics were left out.

Classrooms are going to have to look different and provide lots of different learning opportunities. This is particularly the case for classrooms where the predominant culture is more kinaesthetically-focused. Classrooms in schools in these areas often have to have plenty of space for the kinaesthetics to move about - and plenty of pictures for the visuals. And the teaching may not even stay inside the classroom. Teacher education for those wanting to work in these areas often provides the necessary tools for this type of teaching.

What are some tools for catering to the different learning styles?

Audio: As well as using the traditional teacher-talk, you can also try using songs and rhymes. Videos also help audio learners, as audio learners often pick up a lot from the soundtrack and commentary.

Visuals: Pictures, illustrations and diagrams are vital for reaching visual learners. And, of course, videos are a key tool for explaining concepts to visual learners.

Kinaesthetics: Manipulatives (e.g. counters for math, Scrabble letters for spelling), hands-on activities, drama.

Reading: Textbooks, etc. If you have reader (meaning those who learn by reading) in your class and you are showing a video, don't forget to turn the subtitles on to help them get the maximum opportunity.

Videos are brilliant for reaching a wide range of learning styles - even the kinaesthetics can benefit from watching a video (although you may have to let them move around and fidget a bit). And try making your own videos - your kinaesthetics will love the chance to get up and act for the camera (or figure out how to work the camcorder or webcam).

And don't forget that videos can help you improve your teaching skills. Ok so you are looking for some language learning software to help with learning a new language. Congratulations this is a great way to learn. Especially, if you are not suited to the classroom environment.

Today, there are some really advanced language learning software programs available and at an affordable price too. You can learn your language, at the pace you want, where you want and how you want.

Most of my learning takes place in the car, or out walking with my mp3. It is so much more pleasurable than sitting in a classroom at nights or on the weekends. You can even learn while you are in bed!

But besides your software, there are lots of other free things you can do to rocket your language learning experience and also add to the fun. Here are some, make sure you take advantage of them. Websites In Your Chosen Language.

Search in the language you are learning, for things that you like. You will then see all the websites that you can browse and become familiar with. Just relax and get a feel for the words that keep recurring.

Online Radio Shows.

Ok so you may not be able to understand a word, but you will be getting to hear the accents and you will be surprised how you will start to pick up things. You can hear almost any countries radio station on the internet these days. So just play them in the background.

Online Newspapers.

These are a great source of fun. They have pictures and you can just browse through what interests you. Often you will see the main international news and so you will have a general idea of what the article is about.

Online Dictionary and Translation Services. Actually this is the first thing you should do. Go and find a good online dictionary and translation service and bookmark them. The Google Babel Fish is a great tool for this. You can put a whole article in and have it translated in seconds. Or just single words.

Finally Online Chat Rooms.

Find some chat rooms around a subject or hobby that you have an interest in, in the language you are learning. Try to visit a couple of times a week and read through some of the posts.

2. Take a laptop or smart phone with you to the event for gathering and organizing emails and other contact information. Sitting down to type notes at the end of a day packed with information is a good way to make sure you process what you learn and remember what tidbits you want to try in your own classroom.

3. Take a snack or at the very least stake out the vending machines. Presentations can go long, and often you will be on a different schedule. It can be hard to keep focus if you're hungry.

4. Take a small notebook and extra writing utensils with you. You never know when you'll need to jot down a quick note or write down the little inspirational ideas that come to you during workshops or conversations with colleagues.

5. Pack one of your teacher lanyards before you go. You can display your school ID and your nametag making it easier for others to put a face with a name. Some sort of identification is a must for networking with new people.

6. Be friendly and participate during workshops. You will get so much more out of the conference if you engage with others and take the time to get information from a number of different perspectives. The more information you can gather during the sessions, the greater the benefits of attending the conference.

7. If you are staying overnight, stay at the recommended hotel. You will be close to the events and you will have a greater opportunity to meet up with other friends you might know who are staying at the conference. You can learn a lot from socializing with your colleagues in the evenings.
